What is high blood pressure?

Blood pressure should be less than 120/80 mm Hg. When you have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, your reading is always in the upper range.

Treatment for high blood pressure usually consists of a combination of medication and lifestyle changes to help you manage the condition and prevent or delay related health problems. The goal is to keep your blood pressure in the normal range.
What is high if normal is less than 120/80 mm Hg? Elevated blood pressure occurs when the systolic blood pressure (the top number) is between 120 and 129 and the diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) is less than 80.

Elevated blood pressure does not always increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. However, if left untreated, it frequently progresses to high blood pressure, which definitely increases your risk. When the systolic pressure is 130 or higher, or the diastolic pressure is 80 or higher, hypertension (or high blood pressure) is present.
